Estimation of theoretical intake of synthetic food colours Azorubine, Erythrosine, Indigotine, and Ponceau 4R by the Brazilian population

There are very few studies evaluating the exposure of general population to food colours. This study aimed estimate Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake (TMDI) by Brazilian four rather seldom-used synthetic colours: Azorubine, Erythrosine, Indigotine, and Ponceau 4R. The was conducted using data from two most recent National Household Budget Surveys (carried out in 2008/2009 2017/2018). covered country’s population, sorted into following groups: gender, geographic region, age (among people older than 10 years). results show that mean TMDI (mg/day) does not exceed Acceptable (ADI) any group for highest values found were 12.5% ADI Erythrosine 4% 2017/2018. A decrease observed all colours comparing increases with decreasing age, adolescents being TMDI. When considering prevalence consumption instead consumption, gets closer ADI, reaching 79% adolescent females. intake these proved be within recommended levels.
